A new poll from the Human Rights Campaign finds that 73 percent of Americans are in favor of a Presidential Executive Order barring Federal contractors from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. The poll also found that few Americans even know workplace discrimination like this is legally sanctioned: 87 percent believe discriminating against gay employees is already against the law while only 5 percent know it remains legal.
The most notable thing about the poll is that a majority of virtually every group favors this kind of protection for LGBT people, including 77 percent of Catholics, 73 percent of senior citizens, and 60 percent of conservatives.
But now we know that Barack Obama is not among those 73 percent. “In a high-profile meeting yesterday [Wednesday] afternoon, President Obama informed a group of lobbyists and advocates that his administration would not issue an executive order banning discrimination against LGBT people who work for federal contractors.”
Obama had campaigned in support of such an order back in 2008, but that was then and this is now and what the White House supports is a “multipronged effort to better address workplace discrimination against gay and transgender Americans.” Whatever that is. One thing it definitely isn’t is an Executive Order prohibiting workplace discrimination that could actually make a difference. You can read more about the decision here and here.
As I was putting the final touches on this post, I happened upon a couple of articles that are worth reading. For once, it looks like some other gay folks aren’t entirely happy with this latest cop-out by Obama and are planning to up the pressure on him.
In response, the Administration is trying to put its usual spin on any issue that affects the lives of LGBT people. We’re against employment discrimination, they claim; that’s why we support the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). But that’s nonsense, of course. Hell will freeze over before this Congress passes ENDA. To be honest, it’s not even worthy of being called nonsense. It’s insulting they would even try such a ridiculous spin.
They ought to just admit the truth, that they’re as spineless as Romney and willing to sell LGBT folk down the drain because they believe doing the right thing would hurt politically. The bottom line is it’s always the same with Obama, a day late and a dollar short. It’s politics as usual at the White House and Obama and his cronies don’t want anyone rocking the boat.
He will, of course, graciously accept your campaign contributions and your votes. Good luck with that, sheeple!
